5 Home Remedies to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Everyone wants to have a nice, attractive smile and the best way to get this is if you maintain good oral health that reflects good dental health too. This in turn will be a contributor to your overall health. It is important to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day and this should be the foundation of your basic oral care routine. You can take care of more complicated issues such as bad breath or stains on your teeth by taking additional steps. Here are a few steps that you can take daily in order to improve your general oral hygiene.

Type of Toothbrush

The type of toothbrush you use will ultimately have the most effect on your teeth. Make sure to use a soft-bristled brush so that it doesn’t cause irritation of the gums. Choosing a brush that fits into your mouth fully will also help reach the back corners and edges of the mouth making sure it cleans the back especially areas hard to reach. Change your toothbrush routinely after about 2-3 months or when the bristles have flattened out as this will not help you clean in-between your teeth. Brush your teeth daily at least twice a day to avoid build-up of plaque and acid after meals.

Use of Toothpaste

When it comes to the type of toothpaste, make sure that it has fluoride as this is the nutrient that strengthens teeth and slows down tooth decay. It will also ensure that you get the maximum benefit out of each tooth brushing.

Mouthwash Prior To Brushing

Avoid using mouthwash after brushing your teeth as this removes any valuable fluoride remaining from your teeth after brushing. So always use a non-fluoride mouthwash before brushing. The mouthwash will help any food debris or plaque to loosen up thus making it easier to remove them when brushing. You can alternatively use a mouthwash containing fluoride after brushing to help retain the fluoride in your mouth.

Flossing

Flossing needs to be done after brushing at least once a day. As Peninsula Dental Care advices, this helps remove difficult to reach food particles from between your teeth. Food particles and plaque left in these deep crevices in your teeth for long periods will accelerate tooth decay and lead to a buildup of a hard substance called tartar which is very difficult to remove. Tartar is also one of the causes of bad breath and certain gum recession.

Removing Stains and Whitening Your Teeth

Baking soda is a natural cleaning and bleaching agent and can help remove staining in your teeth. Add about a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda to some water to form a paste and brush the surfaces of the teeth. Doing this once a week should suffice and after a few weeks, you will start noticing that the stains have reduced making your teeth whiter. You can also use lemon juice or vinegar instead of water to make the paste keeping in mind that they will be unpleasant to taste.  Discontinue use in case of any teeth sensitivity.
